After not having much luck on the 21st floor, I headed down to 12, where I encountered an error every time, even though I added a valid credit card number. I've stayed at many "brand-new" hotels over the years — as both a product reviewer and an average Joe, I tend to seek them out. Hotels that bill themselves as historic, meanwhile, remain an occasional curiosity, if for nothing more than a quick look.

The architects were Holabird & Roche who were well known for their groundbreaking Chicago School of skyscrapers. In the early 1990s, I visited with Dolores Nieder at the Ravenswood home where her son Johnny Mowery grew up. Mowery, a 19-year-old college student, was the 13th of Gacy’s 33 victims to be identified. Dolores and I spoke just after WBBM-TV’s Walter Jacobson had aired a five-part interview with Gacy. The youngest were Samuel Stapleton and Michael Marino, both 14; the eldest were Francis Alexander and Russell Nelson, both 21.
In July 2017, Cook County authorities used DNA evidence to identify one of these unidentified victims as 16-year-old James “Jimmie” Byron Haakenson, who had been reported missing since 1976. In October 2021, DNA testing identified another of Gacy’s victims as 21-year-old Francis Wayne Alexander, who also disappeared in 1976. A young man went to the Chicago police for help in 1977, claiming that he had been kidnapped and molested by John Wayne Gacy. The following year, Gacy murdered a 15-year-old boy who had gone to Gacy’s home to ask about a job with his construction company. In 1971, Gacy started a construction business called PDM Contractors, which grew rapidly and became financially successful. After immense pressure and surveillance from the police, according to History.com, Gacy eventually confessed to his crimes in December 1978. Carroll seems to have been the first of four victims known to have been murdered between June 13 and August 6, 1976.[101] Three were between 16 and 17 years old, and one unidentified victim appears to have been an adult. It started in August 1967, when Gacy hired a 15-year-old Donald Voorhees — the son of a fellow member of the Jaycees — to do some housework for him. Gacy lured him into his basement, plied him with alcohol, and forced him to perform oral sex. Then, Gacy began to force some of these young men, including those he employed at KFC, to perform sexual acts with him.
Gacy, known as the “Killer Clown,” picked up the nickname due to his volunteer work as a clown in charitable events and children’s parties. Between 1972 and 1976, Gacy assaulted and murdered at least 33 young males. As heard in Conversations With a Killer, Gacy told police he committed all of his murders inside his home at 8213 West Summerdale Avenue. He preyed on still-unidentified teenagers, some who were drifters from out of town, and some who were local boys who worked for him. At that time, sexual relations between two people of the same sex was illegal in Iowa. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison and was promptly served divorce papers from his wife, whom he would never see again.
The brand-new house was reportedly purchased in 1988 by a woman for her parents. Over time, the address has been vacated and re-sold on numerous occasions. The latest development occurred in March 2021, when the 2,500-square-foot property was sold for $395,000 after two years on the market. With financial help from his mother, Gacy bought the property in the early 1970s and resided there until his arrest in December 1978.
While there’s no evidence that Gacy murdered his victims in clown costume – the eerie photos of a smiling Gacy in face paint and colorful clown garbs have become synonymous with his killings. Gacy buried bodies so close together sometimes that police suspected the killings were performed at the same time. This theory was proven correct when Gacy himself admitted he would sometimes kill more than one victim in a day. He pleaded guilty to charges including the attempted endangering [of] children and disseminating matter harmful to juveniles in 2021, following allegations made by a teenage fan who met him at a concert in 2017. In 2003, Peck was arrested on 11 charges, including sodomy, a lewd act against a child and oral copulation of a person under 16, and oral copulation by anesthesia or controlled substance. While the John Wayne Gacy house leaves a dark stain on history, it’s crucial to remember that it was only one piece of the story.

There are also daily announcements with information on docking and reminders about impending excursion departures. It’s important to note that when the ship docks somewhere in the morning and you go on an excursion, you sometimes will be brought back to the ship in a different location — like another city further down the river. This taught me to take pictures when I first see a scenic sight just in case I wouldn’t have the opportunity again. As you leave the ship, you’ll scan your room key to indicate your departure and rescan it upon returning.

Viking River Cruises
Viking Octantis and Viking Polaris have what some in the cruise industry call an "infinite veranda" — a balcony-like space created by a window wall that opens from the top down. Other little touches in Viking cabins that show the line's attention to functionality include the large and clear lettering on the Freyja toiletries that you'll find in every Viking cabin bathroom. Instead, they are eminently functional, with storage in all the right places, lots of outlets for charging your devices and lighting right where you need it. We love the reading lights built into the fabric headboards of beds, which come in addition to the lamps on bedside tables. During the naming ceremony in Paris, France, Viking welcomed eight new Europe River ships to its award-winning fleet, including 4 purpose-built Viking Longships for the Seine River. Viking keeps track of your expenses during the cruise, including bar items, laundry, phone calls, and purchases from the Viking shop (logo wear and souvenirs).

From standard staterooms overlooking the river, all the way up to the expansive Explorer Suite, you will always be able to find accommodations to suit your unique needs and desires. Viking is also known for a relatively simple-to-understand array of subcategories of rooms within its balcony-cabin and suite categories. Unlike some cruise brands such as Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Line, which offer as many as 36 different sub-types of cabins, Viking's ocean ships offer just six. Throughout all cabins, bathrooms feature rounded sinks, snug glass shower cubes (larger in the suites) and heated floors. There are a few common points of complaint among passengers revolving around the shower cubical in non-suite cabins. It is narrow and tapered at the end, and there's not much in the way of elbow room.
Viking also offers smaller versions of its Longships that have fewer balcony cabins, as well as a few different types of river ships with varying numbers of balcony cabins. Complimentary Wi-Fi is available throughout the ship, including in cabins. On our fairly standard Rhine river cruise, it was reliable, if not blazingly fast. Fresh fruit and bottled water are also complimentary and provided in all cabins daily. There are ice buckets in each cabin, but you must fill them yourself from an ice machine located in the hallway on each deck.
